'SCOUT'S HONOR' TELLS A TALE OF STEVE COZZA'S STRUGGLE FOR INCLUSIVENESS
Date: April 13, 2001
Publication: San Francisco Chronicle

The column focuses on Tom Shepard, a documentary film director, and his award winning piece entitled "Scout's
Honor." The film explores the "moral life" of a teenage boy and received considerable critical acclaim
from viewers at the Sundance Film Festival and from representatives from the Playboy Foundation. Shepard's film
documents Steven Cozza and his nascent gay-rights organization formed to thwart the Boy Scout's anti-gay policies.
Shepard was interested in this idea of a straight person taking on the issue of gay rights and ended up producing
a film that tried represent all the aspects, both negative and positive, of taking such a position. Unfortunately,
Shepard had to leave out many hours of footage including material on gay-friendly troops and historical research
regarding early conceptions in Scouting. However, despite a somewhat antipathetic view, Shepard emerged from the
project with "far more respect" for Scouting. Shepard sensed a stregnthening alliance between gay and
straight people and plans to distribute the film throughout many Gay/Straight Alliance groups across the nation.
