Activist Groups Urge Obama to Reject Boy Scout Honor

Activist groups, including Scouting for All, urge President Obama not to accept the honorary Presidency of the Boy Scouts of America until they stop discriminating.

PNC Financial Services Group of Pittsburgh, PA Contradicts Its Own Domestic Partners Benefits By Donating $200,000 To The Boy Scouts of America's Greater Pittsburgh Council

PNC Financial Services Group located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has given a grant of $200,000 to the Boy Scouts of America's Greater Pittsburgh Council. PNC Financial Services Group should be commended for
acknowledging the needs of its gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered employees by providing them domestic partners benefits. However, PNC also gave these employees a mixed message when it donated $200,000 to the Boy Scouts of America, an organization that discriminates against PNC's GLBT and atheist employees and their children. The Boy Scouts of America discriminates against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and atheist youth and adults. How will Jim Rohr, chairman and chief executive officer explain this to his employees? Mr. Rohr is also on the executive committee of the BSA's Greater Pittsburgh Council, and he has also been the past chair of that committee.

Mr. Scott Cozza, president of Scouting for All telephoned PNC Financial Services Group and spoke with the company's communication manager, Mr. Brian Gerke. Mr. Cozza explained to Mr. Gerke that the BSA discriminates against some of PNC's own employees as well as their children. Mr. Gerke, responded by saying, "We are moving forward with our grant to the Boy Scouts of America." Mr. Gerke also told Mr. Cozza that PNC's CEO was a current member of the executive committee of the Greater Pittsburgh Council. Mr. Cozza then called the Greater Pittsburgh Council and spoke with a representative who confirmed Mr. Rohr was indeed a member of its executive committee and also a past chairman of that committee.

Mr. Cozza, representing Scouting for All, its many members, its Alliance for Human Rights, and all of its volunteers says, " Those businesses that provide antidiscrimination protection and benefits to domestic partners through their benefits policies regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered employees should not contribute to organizations that discriminate against any segment of our society, including gay and atheist
youth and adults. Ask yourself, would PNC contribute $200,000 to the Boy Scouts of America if they excluded African America youth and adults, or Roman Catholics, or those of the Jewish faith? I don't think so; the American public simply would not tolerate it. So why should we tolerate their discrimination against gay and atheist youth and adults? Scouting for All asks Mr. Rohr and PNC Financial Services Group to donate its grant of $200,000 to other young oriented organizations in the Pittsburgh community that do not exclude any youth, for example: Boys and Girls Club, 4-H Club, Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts USA, or the Pittsburgh school districts. All inner city children need to be supported, including our gay (GLBT) and atheist youth."
