Dear Supporter of Scouting for All,
Ten years ago, when I was 12 years old, I took a stand against the Boy Scouts of America's discriminatory policy banning gays and atheists. As a young boy growing up, one of the most important role models and influences in my life was my church camp leader, who happened to be gay. It made no sense to me, even as a 12 year old boy, that an organization that I so much loved being a part of had such a hurtful policy towards my friend. I could not understand how the Boy Scouts of America could discriminate against a man I had such great respect for.
In the 10 years that have passed since I started Scouting for All, our organization has reached out in many different ways. We have worked with churches, Congress, United Way organizations, gay and straight youth, scouting groups around the world, and so much more. After 10 years of Scouting for All's hard work to educate and spread awareness, the BSA still has not changed their hurtful policy which excludes gays and atheists. In this journey, our message has been consistent: all young people deserve to be treated with respect and to be given the opportunity to participate in a great organization such as the BSA. One of the most important lessons I learned in scouting is the importance of becoming self-reliant and respectful of others.
The Declaration of Independence states that "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." It is ironic that the country where these words originated is the only western country with a discriminatory scouting organization.
If we are to live up to these high ideals, no young person should be denied the right to participate in an organization which clearly can be a source of great happiness. No young person should be taught that discrimination against others is acceptable, let alone a moral value.
I join Scouting for All's national team and Board of Directors in asking you for financial support so that we can continue our work to end discrimination by the Boy Scouts of America. We could not continue the work that Scouting for All does if it was not for all of the generous support we have received over the years. We truly believe in making the world a better place for all youth. We greatly appreciate your past support and hope you will continue to join us in our efforts to make the Boy Scouts of America an organization that welcomes all youth.
