Boy Scout Canned Food Drive

It's that time of year again of Scouting for Food -- when the Boy Scouts collect can goods for the holidays.

If you choose to donate to them please attach a note to each can reminding them that gay and atheist scouts are people too. I've found this a disturbing trend among Boy Scouts to exclude homosexuals and atheists and any other group that does not conform to a 19th century interpretation of 'normalcy.'

I was a Boy Scout once. There's nothing wrong with someone being a Boy Scout and being gay or being an atheist. It just doesn't make sense to me. It forces young men, who are still dealing with their identities, to learn that they are looked down upon because of who they are. And it forces the closeted men who lead these groups to remain in the closet at great cost to
themselves and their troops.

So, please, if you donate to the Boy Scouts canned food drive please let them know that you support the gay and atheist communities by attaching a note to each can! Suggested notes for cans (preferably in permanent marker):

• You should respect and defend the rights of all people
• We support Scouting for All
• Atheists believe in Scouts
• 'Morally straight' and 'gay' are not mutually exclusive terms
• Children should not be taught to hate
