Chief Seattle Boy Scout Council, Agree to Allow High School Group Not to Discriminate, Seattle, Washington

Subject: BOY SCOUTS TO ALLOW H.S. GROUP NOT TO DISCRIMINATE

Abstract: The Safe Schools Coalition of Washington [state] reports that BSA's Seattle council acquiesced to Seattle Public Schools' request to re-classify the Garfield High School Outdoor Program from "Venture Crew" to "Explorer Post," since the latter do not have an anti-gay, anti-atheist policy. Meanwhile, leaders of the Outdoor Program still seek to sever all BSA affiliation to direct financial support elsewhere.

Original title: "Chief Seattle Boy Scout Council, Agree to Allow High School Group Not to Discriminate"

In a Jan 19, 2001 press release, The Safe Schools Coalition of Washington [state] (SSCW) reported that the Chief Seattle Boy Scout Council, at the request of Seattle Public Schools (SPS), has agreed to allow the Garfield High School Outdoor Program -- one of the largest troops in Washington State -- to
change its status from "Venture Crew" to "Explorer Post." Venture Crews are co-ed troops for high schoolers which, as part of BSA, discriminate on the basis of both sexual orientation and religion. Explorer Posts, part of BSA's Learning for Life Program, do not have a policy of shunning atheists or gays.

The student leaders of the Outdoor Program still hope to find another organization with whom to affiliate in lieu of BSA, so as to avoid sending their dues to a discriminating organization. SSCW holds that the goal needs to be disassociation from BSA altogether. "You can't fertilize one twig without fertilizing the whole tree," says Beth Reis, Co-chair. "Supporting one 'branch' serves to free up dollars that [they] can redirect to 'exclusive', hurtful branches."

The press release contains the Coalition's congratulations to the SPS for exacting the concession from BSA; pertinent SPS and BSA policy statements; as well as a 21-year historical overview of BSA's
discriminatory and punitive actions against gays, gay sympathizers and non-believers.
