Activist Groups Urge Obama to Reject Boy Scout Honor

Activist groups, including Scouting for All, urge President Obama not to accept the honorary Presidency of the Boy Scouts of America until they stop discriminating.

John Archer, 2000 Business Person of the Year by the Beverly, MA, Chamber of Commerce Resigns as the BSA Yankee Clipper Council Fundraiser

The well-known Boys Scouts activist has cut his ties with the Boys Scouts over the organization's policy against gays. Archer had volunteered as the Beverly-area fund-raising coordinator for the Boy Scouts for the last four or five years by writing and mailing approximately 100 letters per year seeking donations. But when asked to help out again this year, he responded with an emphatic "No." Saying, it would constitute tacit approval of the national organization's policy against gays. "If you have to debate basic human rights, you're in trouble," said Archer. "It's time to stand up and say it's wrong."

Archer continued by calling the Boy Scouts' policy "prehistoric," "hurtful" and "ugly." "It's not 1952, for God's sake, it's 2001," he said. "We're too far along. It's the new millennium, let's get a grip. While Archer's did not go as far to say that parents should pull their kids out of the Boy Scouts, he did recommend hitting them where it hurst - their wallets - in order to help them understand that America is quickly growing tired of hatred.
