A STATEMENT CONCERNING BOY SCOUT SUNDAY: A United Methodist Congregation
by Sally Haynes
Today is Boy Scout Sunday. Across this nation, many fine churches are celebrating the many accomplishments of
boys in this organization. Boy Scouts will be serving as ushers and liturgists in church today. Many will be
receiving religious awards during their worship services. Churches who give of their facilities and their time
will celebrate the many good things about Boy Scouting.
The Worship Committee of Trinity United Methodist Church, however, has made a conscious decision not to observe
Boy Scout Sunday. For all of the good which this organization has done, we believe that their discriminatory stance
against homosexuals violates both the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scout Oath.
Trinity Church has many Eagle Scouts within our membership. We have been the site for two Eagle Scout projects
within the last year. Several boys within our congregation are involved currently in scouting. We feel the tension
of being part of a good organization which has taken a stance that is wrong.
Our Worship Committee, after much discussion, decided that Trinity must continue to remain a safe place for all
people on Sunday morning. We are committed to being a sanctuary from bias and discrimination that may exist in
the rest of the world. To celebrate an organization which rejects boys on the basis of their sexual orientation
is to violate that sense of safety and sanctuary which Trinity Church offers.
On this Boy Scout Sunday, our praise to Jesus Christ will echo resoundingly through our sanctuary, as it does every
Sunday. Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts will be present in worship, as they are every Sunday; some will
be gay, and some will be straight. All will worship together in a spirit of Christian unity, just as we do every
Sunday. And the sanctuary of Trinity will continue to be a "sanctuary," a place of safety and love.
