Gay Teens Need Our Support

Date: March 22, 2001
Publication: The Denver Post
Writer: Diane Carman, Denver Post Columnist

Summary: A follow-up column to a news story yesterday about the Colorado state senate possibly debating the Scout issue next week when it takes up a measure to designate "Scouting Week in Colorado" to celebrate the BSA's narrow victory in last June's Supreme Court case. The writer highlights the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recent report stating that
"sexual orientation" is not a choice and that gay and Lesbian teens are particularly vulnerable to social prejudice, peer abuse and isolation making them as a group more susceptible to extreme depression, risk behavior and suicide. Even teens who are not gay but thought to be may be targeted for ridicule, and this youthful homophobia is an important factor in violent school incidents. The writer notes that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) perpetuates and promotes these problems by their anti-gay stance while ironically purporting to develop youth "character" and "values." On this basis, she questions the wisdom of the Legislature's intended action.

Scouting For All is not an alternative scouting program.
We are an education and advocacy organization reaching out to gay and nontheist youth and adults in our effort to get the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its exlusionary policy.
