Summary: Mark LaFontaine, who became an Eagle Scout in 1983 and who has been active in protesting BSA's policy
of excluding gays was accepted into the National Eagle Scout Association, then received a letter notifying him
that his membership was being revoked. The group, however, has cashed his membership check. Terry C. Lawson is
the director of NESA, which is akin to an alumni association, that raises money and encourages support of local
Boy Scout troops and councils, says that the association has the right to refuse membership. LaFontaine attracted
attention in September when he and another man arrived at the South Florida Council in Miami Lakes to apply to
be troop leaders, but was rejected because of his homosexuality. LaFontaine sent a copy of his membership certificate
to the council office where he appealed the denial, and it was after that that LaFontaine received his revocation
letter.
