Greater Winona joins nondiscriminating United Ways, BSA balks
Publication: Associated Press, March 23, 2001
Summary: Two Boy Scouts of America councils say they will give up funding rather than sign a nondiscrimination
pledge required by United Way of Greater Winona in Winona, Minn. During the current budget year, the Gamehaven
Council, based in Rochester, Minn., received $16,473, and the Gateway Area Council, based in La Crosse, Wis.,
received $2,108, according to Beth Forkner Moe, the United Way chapter's executive director. Richard Good, executive
director of the Gamehaven Council, said United Way funding accounts for about half the administrative budget for
the 22 troops and 1,100 Scouts in Winona County. Mike Diamond, executive director of the Gateway Area Council,
said national BSA policy disallowed signing the pledge. He also affirmed the inappropriateness of gay volunteers
as role models.
