Summarized Article
The Santa Barbara County board of supervisors voted recently to end the Boys Scouts' lease granting exclusive use
of the top floor of a public building, known as Scouthouse, that the Scouts had been using for 70 years.
The Boy Scouts fired a top executive after he reveled during lease negotiations that he was gay and gay rights
groups have been rallying for a ban on the Scout's special access to public property ever since. The new 25 year
lease allowed the scouts continued use of a building the county had wanted to tear down 2 years ago because it
is seismically unsafe and is rat and insect infested.
Troop 33 raised $175,000 to be used to fund renovations to the carriage house but the county now says it will
raise the needed funds itself. The property will now become available for public use for all youth groups on a
reserve basis with the Scouts getting no special privileges.
