Activist Groups Urge Obama to Reject Boy Scout Honor

Seek the truth about Boy Scouts

The organization Scouting For All (scoutingforall.org) has a Web page dedicated to tracking news articles, editorials and reports about Boy Scout policies excluding gay boys and leaders from membership. Scouting for All also provides information about what's happening with a movement to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its policy of discrimination against gay youth and adults.

You can check out what other Scout councils are doing, such as the St. Paul Indianhead Council's resolution to challenge national BSA membership standards or the Greater New York Council's decision to fight to repeal national BSA's discrimination policies. Also there are stories about United Way organizations that have ceased funding Boy Scout programs and how other United Ways have reached an agreement with their local council to continue their support. Of particular interest is the Chicago Sun Times' report about the seven Cub Scout packs that were tossed out of scouting because they made the mistake of informing their Boy Scout Council that the chartering partner school district had a nondiscrimination policy.

Invvestigate who is running the Boy Scouts of America, scouting values or the core values of some religious organizations. Discover what youth is saying about BSA discrimination issues. Question how much of your contribution to Boy Scouts goes directly to support youth and just how much of your contribution is used to mobilize resources, defend and enforce membership requirements. Then ask yourself, how can scouting deny membership because of a person's beliefs or sexuality, despite the fact that their scouting behavior and conduct and actions are exemplary to its precepts and principles?
