Syracuse University's Carrier Dome to no longer host BSA 'Boy Power' fund-raiser
April 28, 2001
Syracuse University News
Story by Kevin Morrow
Since 1984, Hiawatha Seaway Council of BSA has held their annual "Boy Power" fund raising dinner in
Syracuse (New York) University's Carrier Dome.
Kenneth A. Shaw, Chancellor of SU, has written to the council, however, and told them that Syracuse University's
facilities would no longer be available for their use due to their conflicting policies on discrimination based
on sexual orientation. "I am not prepared to ask the Board of Trustees to change our policy," (The university
does not discriminate based on sexual orientation, while the Boy Scouts of America does,) "nor do I expect
the Hiawatha Councilto be able to persuade the national BSA to change its position" Shaw wrote in a letter
dated April 6 to the Hiawathan Council.
"Both the university and the BSA are private organizations allowed by law to determine who is and who
isn't allowed to participate in our various activites."
The use of the Carrier Dome to raise funds for the BSA is why the Syracuse University has taken this position;
it raises funds for BSA, and that includes their policies, which are in conflict with those of the university.
Out of respect for what the Hiawatha Council has done for boys and young men of the Syracuse area, their final
dinner to be held in the Carrier Dome took place on April 4, 2001. This allowed the Council to secure a new site
for dinners in the future, if they chose to do so.
