United Way penalizes Boy Scouts Gay Rule

Summarized Article
The United Way of Jackson County, Oregon, will cut their grant to the Crater Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of
America 15% per year, beginning this year, and continue doing so until the anti-gay discrimination policy is changed.
This will affect the basic grants but not the donations which are specifically earmarked for the Boy Scouts. This
year's grant will be cut from $41,000 to $34,800; if the policy continues it will drop to $18,200 by 2005. All
agencies receiving money have been required to sign a
statement each year saying that they did not discriminate, including on the basis of sexual orientation. The Council
has been signing that statement each year; they did not refuse to sign it until after the Supreme Court ruling
in 2000. The Council receives funding from 11 United Way agencies in southern Oregon and northern California,
but the Jackson County group is the only one which, so far, has cut their funding. Scout official Ed Russel sees
the discrimination policy as a "non-issue" and feels that the parents of most Scouts agree with him.
