The Boy Scouts of America Refused to Charter a Scout Pack with a United Methodist Congregation

Accordng to the National Weekly Newsletter for United Methodist Leaders "Newscope," Volume 29, Number 16/April 20, 2001, the Boy Scouts have refused to charter a Scout Pack with a UM Congregation. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has denied a UM congregation's "open and affirming" policy toward gay boys and men, a BSA official confirmed to Newscope.

The application of Cornerstone UMC in Oak Park, Ill., was refused because of village and school-district policies that prohibit discrimination against gays. The Boy Scouts of America spokesperson stated that the BSA is a private organization and has a right to set its own standards. Bishop Joseph Sprague said that the UMC clearly supports the sacred worth and civil rights of all
persons, including homosexuals.
