Fairfield Cub Scout pack protests Boy Scout policy

(May 21, 2001 - Conn. Post)

Hoping to encourage others to follow suit, Cub Scout Pack 197 has taken issue with the Boy Scouts of America for its ban on openly homosexual leaders and members. Membership in the pack dropped from 80 to 65 last year, according to Pack 197 Cubmaster Jim D'Acosta. He attributes the drop to the policy, along with a decision by the Connecticut Yankee Council, the state's Scouting administrative group, to hold a camping activity on the Jewish new year. The combined effect of these two actions -- the one national and deliberate; the other local and unintended, but then ignored -- created an image of Scouting as insensitive at best and discriminatory and homophobic at worst, D'Acosta wrote in a letter earlier this month to the Boy Scouts of America and copied to the Milford-based local Scout council.

Scouting For All is not an alternative scouting program.
We are an education and advocacy organization reaching out to gay and nontheist youth and adults in our effort to get the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its exlusionary policy.
