Doug Gentry, of a Couincil in California, Resigns from the BSA After Almost 42 Years Because of Its Discriminatory Policy Against Persons who Are Gay

Dear Friends, Scouters, Scouts, Venturers, and Parents -

I haven't looked forward to sending this message, but it's time. Though I made my decision many months ago, I wanted to be
sure that the Jamboree folks were home and most of the high adventure groups had headed off for their treks, before making this announcement.

On September 1, the Bowline and Jambo web sites, and all of the Scouting-related email lists hosted by Dynapolis, will shut
down. Just before then, I will end my registration with the BSA, drawing a close to a 42 year association with Scouting.

I'll put a more detailed explanation on http://www.bowline.org and later http://www.jambo.org . The short version is that I've
lost heart in the BSA, and can see no sure nor swift end to its misguided policy regarding homosexual youth and leaders. Some of you know that this is a very personal issue for me, as I love and am extremely proud of my gay son, who joined me for 10 of those 42 years in Scouting. I've spoken out on this issue here and in other forums, and played a behind-the-scenes role in the early stages of the "Scouts Honor" video that is the topic of much discussion among Scouters, and I am active in our local chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbians and Gays.)....

Signed
Doug Gentry
