Kimball Elementary Writes to the Chief Seattle Council of the BSA and says, No More Use of Our School as Long as the BSA Discriminates

SEATTLE UNION RECORD, December 22, 2000

Letter: Recruiting Boy Scouts at Kimball elementary is out

(The following letter was sent to Norman Stone, Chief Seattle Council, Boy Scouts of America)

Dear Mr. Stone,

The Cub Scout recruiter from Chief Seattle Council has been coming to Kimball Elementary School for a number of years to enlist new members into the Boy Scouts organization. Many students from our school have joined scouting as a result of these efforts. You were always welcome here because we believed that scouting promoted positive values for our children and
offered them one more way to achieve growth and success.

Unfortunately, the recent lawsuit and Supreme Court decision in favor of discrimination against gay leadership and involvement in Boy Scouts has forced Kimball PTSA to reconsider our support for scouting recruitment at our school. There are a number of gay parents with children in this school. They should not be forced to explain to their first-grade sons why they would not be allowed to participate fully in scouting activities. In addition, boys who join scouting and discover that they are gay during the transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts should not be faced with one more embarrassing attack on who they are.

For the Boy Scouts of America to promote self-pride, honesty and service to the community on the one hand and engage in homophobia, bigotry and discrimination on the other is counter to the values that we try to encourage in our children. There is no other large national organization such as Girl Scouts, YMCA, 4-H that offers services to children and families that discriminates in this way.

If the Chief Seattle Council can demonstrate that there will be no discrimination against Kimball families related to sexual orientation in local scouting activities, the PTSA will review the decision that we have taken. In the meantime, we ask that you not send scouting recruiters to Kimball school.
