Pack 43 Corte Madera, California Anti-discrimination Statement
September 29, 2000
Mr. Roy L. Williams, Chief Scout Executive
National Headquarters Boy Scouts of America
PO Box 152079
Irving, Texas 75015-2079
To: Mr. Roy Williams
My name is Cathleen Acheritogaray. I am a Den leader and Advancement Chairperson for Pack 43 in Corte Madera, California.
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a Boy Scout. Considering my gender, that was impossible. I always looked
on with envy as my male friends participated in solemn ceremonies, Pinewood Derbys, camping, canoeing, etc. When
I became a mom, I decided I wanted my sons to be involved. I appreciated not only the fun activities, but the discipline
and values that the boys are taught. I took an active role in Scouting, and we have reaped the benefits However,
these benefits are being poisoned by the National Council's discriminatory policies. I am having a hard time justifying
our families continued participation in Scouts, as are many parents in my Den and Pack. We are sticking with Scouts
because of the boys and we are trying to change Scouting's discriminatory policies from within.
As a Den leader, I must tell you that in the past, right now, and in the future, I will never discriminate against
any person, male or female, child or adult, on the basis of his or her sexual orientation. All are welcome in our
Den and Pack. Also, I was stunned to learn that in England, the birthplace of Scouting, one's sexual orientation
(or gender, by the way)! is not even a consideration when you are a Scout or leader! This is true of the majority
of European countries. Why is it ok for gay people to be Scouts and leaders in Canada, England, Sweden, Netherlands,
etc., but not in the U.S.A?
I wholeheartedly believe in Scouting on the local level, but I am ashamed of the National Council. I pray that
the current policy changes soon, for the sake of Boy Scouts of America's future.
Sincerely,
Cathleen Acheritogaray
