I. What is the Scouting for All Alliance for Human Rights

The Scouting for All Alliance for Human Rights is made up of individual grassroots organizers, community based organizations and national organizations committed to getting the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its discriminatory policy, harmful to both our gay youth and straight youth. The "Alliance" has been established in an attempt to help mobilize, network, and support efforts across the country and internationally. The formation of the Alliance is also a way to recognize those individuals and groups who are taking a stand against the social injustice of the BSA. Alliance members view the discriminatory policy of the Boy Scouts of America as a human rights violation. As Alliance members we believe the BSA's policy of discrimination is a human rights violation because it discriminates against individuals because of one's sexual orientation and atheists because of their belief. All other Americans can become members of the Boy Scouts of America. Bill Clinton, as President in 1996, said, "To discriminate against an American is un-American." The Alliance asks, would we as a society tolerate the BSA discriminating against people of color? What if the Boy Scouts of America said, African American youth and adults were not allowed in Scouting? How would the American people respond? The Alliance asks, would we as a society tolerate the Boy Scouts of America discriminating against Mormons or Catholics or any religion because of their religious belief? The answer is that those who believe in social justice for all would not tolerate any form of discrimination against any segment of our society. When gay youth and adults, and atheists are discriminated against we as Alliance members are offended and feel violated as a people. We stand together in seeking healing change within the Boy Scouts of America, a program which currently has lost the vision of the World Scouting movement. This vision is based on the World Scouting movement's principle that scouting was created as an outdoor program for all children.
