Group Fails to Turn in Petitions to Secretary of State
Santa Fe, New Mexico - A small coalition of individuals failed to submit the 51,000 petition signatures necessary
for placing the 2003 amendments to the New Mexico Human Rights Act (Senate Bill 28) on the ballot in November.
The 2003 amendments added sexual orientation and gender identity to the existing Human Rights Act which protects
people in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and union memmbership.
Advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights have been identifying voters throughout the
state since October of last year in order to defeat the possible ballot measure. Kevin Hoover, campaign
director of Basic Rights said, "It is gratifying to see that the majority of New Mexicans are fair-minded
people who think that discrimination of any kind in the workplace is wrong."
"We are pleased to see that they were unable to obtain the necessary signatures even though the Attorney
General has already said this issue is not subject to referendum," said Linda Siegle, spokesperson for Basic
Rights. Based on the opinion issued by the New Mexico Attorney General in May, even if the necessary signatures
had been submitted, the Secretary of State would have been obligated to reject them.
Basic Rights New Mexico will now shift its organizing and voter identification efforts to other equal rights
issues.
Basic Rights New Mexico works to identify, engage, and mobilize pro-LGBT voters to lobby and vote for issues
advancing equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender New Mexicans.
