Eagle Scout Supports The Efforts of Steven Cozza and Scouting for All Against The Discrimination
of The Boy Scouts of America
July 7, 2004
Dear Steven,
In reading the transcript, I see that you have delivered an eloquent speech to the Anti-Defamation League. I congratulate
you on your award from that organization.
I too am an Eagle Scout. I went from Bobcat Cub Scout to Eagle Scout in a family of 6 who were very much into
Scouting. I am likely twice your age and happen to be gay. My experience in Scouting was wonderful. That experience
led to a lifetime of public service as a paramedic. As an adult I've also served as an Explorer Advisor sharing
my career in public safety with young men and women who have an interest in that field.
It will come as no surprise to you that there were gay boys and men in the BSA back in the 1960's and 70's, just
as they are now. I, like you, cannot understand why the BSA has chosen this point in time to take issue with gays
in the BSA. You and I are caught in the same paradox; we are both proud of our Eagle Scout rank, yet ashamed of
the hatred and bigotry the BSA now teaches.
I learned many valuable things in the BSA. But, in the pre-internet age, one thing I learned in the BSA was that
I was not alone as a young gay person. What might have been a life ended prematurely back in those days
turned into a life dedicated to saving lives, due in large part to the BSA experience.
You certainly honor the Eagle Badge and the Scout Oath by your actions.
Sincerely,
Kevin (Anonymous), EMT-P
