A Public Statement from Metropolitan Community Churches
For Immediate Release: May 8, 2005
Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) Endorse Public Action, Candlelight Vigil at Boy Scouts of American's Annual
Conference Group Calls For End to BSA's Discriminatory Policies Against Gays, Atheists
Los Angeles -- The international movement of Metropolitan Community Churches today endorsed the public actions
and candlelight vigil to take place on May 24 at the Boy Scouts of America's Annual Conference in
Grapevine, Texas.
The Reverend Dr. Cindi Love, Executive Director of Metropolitan Community Churches, will represent MCC. At a related
press conference sponsored by "Scouting for All," she will call on the Boy Scouts of America to rescind
policies that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender variation and religious conviction.
The Boy Scouts of America prohibit membership to gays and atheists.
"Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) are committed to creating welcoming places for all members of the human
family," said Dr. Love. "MCC stands in solidarity with "Scouting For All" in the ongoing campaign
to open the Boy Scouts of America to gay members and to atheists. We call upon all people of goodwill to stand
against discrimination."
"The policies of the Boy Scouts of America violate the ideals of tolerance, respect, and acceptance,"
added Dr. Love. "It is long past time for the Boy Scouts to end policies that are harmful to children and
youth, and that exclude potential members based on personal or religious prejudice."
MCC is the world's largest faith community with a primary, affirming ministry to lesbians, gays, bisexuals and
transgender persons. MCC includes more than 43,000 members and adherents in 250 congregations in 23
counties around the globe. Each year, more than 225,000 persons attend programs and services of MCC churches.
