"There's no reason for us to meet," said Shields............We have 4 million members meeting every week. Our members vote with their feet."

Well, BSA's members ARE voting with their feet.

May 29, 2005

For 5 years in a row, membership in Scouting programs has DECREASED. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing all showed declines in membership in 2004. Traditional Scouting programs have lost over 1 million members since 1989. And like too many other paid employees of BSA, Mr. Shields seems to be overstating numbers.

B.S.A. numbers show only 3.1 million boys in Scouting programs, not 4 million. And with so many investigations into fraudulent membership claims, total enrollment may be even lower than that."

I found 2004 numbers posted on

In 2003 Traditional Scouting is 3,200,218, TOTAL (including Learning for Life) is 4,755,444

In 2004 Traditional Scouting is 3,145,331, TOTAL (including Learning for Life) is 4,825,444

Ok, Traditional Scouting is going down but Total numbers are going up - ONLY because of LFL.

BSA does NOT treat "numbers" lightly. They are adept at quoting numbers and know EXACTLY what they are doing. BSA has ALWAYS publicly quoted numbers that make them look as good as possible.

Where did the 4.1 million number in the "ethical decision" press release come from? The same number or close (4 million) was reported in coverage of your protest: "We have 4 million members meeting every week. Our members vote with their feet."

The 4.1 million number is too high for a claim of Scouting membership and too low for a "TOTAL" membership claim.........

Given their past history, BSA should be claiming 4.8 million "youth" (they aren't all Scouts - so we are correct) or (keeping it vague since the number dropped) "over 3 million boys in Traditional Scouting programs."

So, where did the 4.1/4 million number come from? Did total membership drop by 700,000? Is BSA "quietly" restating enrollment numbers in light of the recent scandals nationwide? What's going on?????

The whole "Ethical Decision" press release screams out for a satirical response.....when I have the time.....

Scouting For All is not an alternative scouting program.
We are an education and advocacy organization reaching out to gay and nontheist youth and adults in our effort to get the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its exlusionary policy.
