United Way Gives Boy Scouts Money They Withheld!
1/14/2006
ATLANTA -- The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta announced it would give the local Boy Scouts $250,000, six months
after it withheld the
donation over inflated numbers of inner-city recruits. The charity decided this week to release the money after
reviewing the Scout's plan for
improving Operation First Class. The program is designed to draw more inner-city boys, mostly blacks and Hispanics,
by waiving registration
fees, providing free uniforms and offering scholarships for camps.
"The board felt the Scouts have done due diligence in addressing the situation, so they decided to release
the funds," United Way spokesman Mark Dvorak said. He said the money will be delivered within weeks.
The Atlanta Area Council earlier reported having 10,238 Scouts in the program. But an audit this summer found only
5,361 boys were registered. The audit concluded that pressure to show increased membership led some council staffers
to inflate numbers.
The United Way approved a $945,107 grant to the Scouts in May, but kept the $250,000 after the audit.
