Scouting for All

Asks that you support David Flaks and his effort to get the Cheltenham Township to disassociate itself from the Boy Scouts of America until the BSA rescinds it national policy of discrimination against homosexual and atheist youth.

Refer to David's message below and National Scouting for All's Response. There are a list of counsel members belowyou can email.

Scott Cozza, Pres.
Scouting for All

Hi All,

As you know, it has been six months since I wrote to the Cheltenham Commissioners, PA,asking them to disassociate the Township from the Boy Scouts until such time as the scouts give up their discriminatory policies. Not only have the commissioners failed torescind the scouts' free use of township property, they have refusedeven to set a timeline for when the matter will be decided. I've attended Public Affairs Committee meetings, buttheissue hasn'tbeen on the agenda. I've asked about the process for deciding the matter, but they haveput me off. It seems clear that they are hoping that we will go away and the issue will die.

This weekend, the Philadelphia Inquirer Neighbors section has an excellentfront-page story about the scouting issuein Cheltenham. (You can view it online at I'm hopingthat the public exposure might put a little pressure on the commissioners to act. With the publication of the article, the timing seems right for another e-mail campaign on our part. I hope that youwill take acouple minutes toe-mail a few lines to your commissioner (or all of them) to let them know that we still oppose discrimination and we are still waiting for them to make a decision. Here are their addresses:

Harvey Portner,
Jeffrey Muldawer,
Mickey Simon,
Michael Swavola,
Robert Gerhard,
Charles McKeown
Paul Greenwald
David Kraynik (Township Manager)

Please forward this e-mail to others who might be interested.

Thank you,David Flaks

National Scouting for All's Response,

Scouting for All and its 1,000s of members nationally and internationally ask you to vote to have the Cheltenham Township to disassociate from the Boy Scouts of America. City Councils are supposed to represent all the people not some of the people. Tax payer money should notin any way go to a bigoted organization. Currently the Boy Scouts of America discriminates against homosexual and atheist youth and adults. Some in your community may say, "Well I have not seen any discrimination here." To those individuals we must ask them, would they say that about the KKK or any organization that discriminates. Because we have not witnessed it here does meanthat we should still support them or have anything to do with them. Scouting for All says no, and all those American's who believe in human rights and social justice for all would also say absolutely no to the BSA.

It would only take one person in your community to report toyour local scout council and to the BSA nationalthat he or she suspects a scout unit has a homosexual and or atheist youth or adult as a member and they would be investigated and kicked out if those individuals were found to be "guilty" of being homosexual or atheist.

The leading cause of death for homosexual youth is suicide. The Boy Scouts of America's discriminatory policy and practice only adds to that problem.

So I ask you and your fellow council members to vote on the side of justice and human rights and not on the side of bigotry, hatred, exclusion, divisiveness and discrimination. Vote to disassociate from the BSA until the BSA national changes its national bigoted policy.
