Miami Dade School Board Bans Scouts from Facilities
Hello, although it wasn't in the paper today, the Miami Dade School Board has told units that use their facilities
for Cub Scout and Boy Scout meetings that they are no longer allowed to use the facilities as of today.
The School Board had already "indefinitely postponed" School Night for Scouting because the BSA discrimination
policies violate School Board policies, but today and over the weekend, leaders were contacted by the principals
and/or administrators of their schools and told they could no longer use the facilities for meetings. The Cubmaster
that works with the pack next door to our church (they meet at an elementary school) went to the school this morning
and was told to remove all scouting related posters, flyers, items, etc. from the premises. They took down the
sign on the marquee announcing that the pack meets there. They have been there for 30 years.
The church that sponsors my troop and crew had an emergency meeting last night and opened our doors to the cub
pack if they needed it (they did and they will be meeting in our facility as of tomorrow). We have an open door,
nondiscrimination policy and the cub families are aware of this, since they feed into our troop.
So the school sponsored units In Miami Dade will either have to move to a nearby church or merge with a unit
already chartered by a church or corporate sponsor. We expect Broward County to follow suit, but their lawyers
are taking longer to analyze the situation.
We have a few gay members in our church and a couple of the unit members have gay family members. Just thought
you'd like to know -- if something appears in the Miami Herald tomorrow, I'll send it along.
